How many songs are you thinking about?
Well, it is a full album, I want to have 11, I guess. I believe it is an excellent number of tracks to have on a complete LP.
Great! So, our next move would be… you go home, go over the full list of songs you might have on your mind, and choose the best 11. These would be the songs we’ll work on.
What do you mean the best ones? Aren’t they all my best? I wouldn’t have written them if I wasn’t sure they are the best I can produce. And don’t get me wrong, I know exactly what you mean; of course, some of them might be better than the rest, and yeah, this is going to be my first album so it would only make sense putting in the ones that one would consider to be the best. But some of them doesn’t belong to each other, some of them were written in different periods of my life, with different flavours and texture of sound and meaning. If I would just bring the best 11 song that I have written, the listener wouldn’t connect to the album, and then it will become meaningless.
This is the first album you are going to issue; you know your songs, but you also need to understand that people might not be in a place where they will listen to the entire album. Isn’t that missing the point a bit? To have the best songs as a one work as people might connect to some songs and other might connect to different ones?
I’m still writing you know, and there are some new songs that I believe would make an excellent addition to this album, but they are not connected to the rough sound I wish this first album to have.
I’ll tell you even more… it is the first album of mine, would there be any more in the future, I don’t know. I do have the ambition to continue and release more, but we’ll have to take one step at a time. And it’s not going to be easy, I have many songs that wouldn’t make the final cut, but it’s not because they were good enough, it’s because they are not part of the great story.
I’ll make a deal with you; I’ll bring the best 11 songs I find that will define the sound of this album. some have the same vibe, others will touch different emotions, but all of them together will become one great album that I, with all modesty, really believe would generate the demand for a 2nd album… there are can choose the next best 11 songs for that period.
